MEGAN SULLIVAN
MTM class of 2017
Current occupation: Clinical Operations Manager at Current Health
“Before the MTM program, I was working as a nurse at the bedside and realized I wanted to be a part of upstream innovation. I wanted to work on products that not only affected the patients I was caring for that day, but were a part of thousands of people’s lives. The MTM for me was a perfect combination of engineering, business, and clinical needs to get those products to patients.”
CHRISTINE RACHEL JOSEPH
MTM class of 2017
Current occupation: Device Developer, Human Factors Engineer at Genentech
“With the MTM, you get this idea that there’s different ways you can be an engineer, or think like a scientist, or take this into your own medical practice, or use this in scaling your business and your dreams. The kinds of things I felt ready and qualified to do, and the kind of jobs I looked for after the MTM, were much bigger in scope than the work I was looking for before.”
MARIE FREEBERG
MTM class of 2015
Current occupation: Director of Alliance Management at MyHealthTeams
“The MTM program has made a difference in my work in that I’m motivated to think outside of the box. The program itself is very unique and gets you to think about problems from many angles. It’s definitely this new forefront of the industry where we get to integrate all these different pieces – the clinical, research, engineering and business sides. I find that it’s made a difference for me in that I was able to move from a strictly scientific perspective into more of a holistic, business perspective.”

“The MTM program provides much more than the training to translate a medical innovation from bench top to bedside. As I realized throughout the program, students from very diverse backgrounds are being transformed into future leaders in the medical industry. The training and exposure I received across the board with engineering leadership, medical device development, entrepreneurship, and clinical R&D through the MTM program was the best preparation to achieve my long-term career goals.”
LEO SZE
MTM class of 2014
Current occupation: Medical student at the Washington University School of Medicine
“The MTM program provides students with an in-depth understanding of the critical factors that contribute to compelling a innovation, specifically the considerations investors and grant reviewers use to evaluate a project. In addition, the MTM program offers students real world experience in marketable skills such as leadership, research & development, business analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration.”
LISSETTE WILENSKY
MS ’12 in Bioengineering (focus on Translational Medicine)
Current occupation: Senior Scientist at BD Biosciences
“For someone looking to thrive in the ever-growing biotechnology industry, this program was perfect for me. It provided training in areas like product development and market assessment that are missing from most undergraduate curricula but are nonetheless invaluable for industry personnel. All of this was coupled with the practical experience of designing our own product. The MTM program gave me a well-rounded experience that expanded the skills I already had and endowed me with a whole new set of skills that will help me succeed in my career.”
VAIBHAVI UMESH
MS ’12 in Bioengineering (focus on Translational Medicine)
Current occupation: Research Specialist at Kumar Lab, UC Berkeley Department of Bioengineering
“Pursuing this degree allowed me to further my interest in both medicine and medical-device innovation. From studying the complexities of clinical trials to understanding the necessary steps in device development, this curriculum gave me a holistic view of medical therapeutic design. Because of this program, I am better equipped to take the next step toward realizing my potential as a medical leader and innovator.”
JOYCE BAO
MS ’12 in Bioengineering (focus on Translational Medicine)
Current occupation: Senior Product Manager at Fitbit
“Immediately after MTM, I joined the Siemens Graduate Program, a two-year global rotation program, and worked within various departments from research and collaborations to marketing. Because of the breadth of my experiences and ability to synthesize information from different parts of product development cycle, I was offered the opportunity to serve as the global product manager defining new surgical imaging applications. The MTM program was a great stepping stone for taking on such roles that involve multidisciplinary teams.”
DEREK DASHTI

PHILIP CHUNG
MS ’11 in Bioengineering (focus on Translational Medicine)
Current occupation: Medical student at UCSF School of Medicine & Engineering, Director for the Smart Diaphragm Project at UCSF
“Being in MTM allowed me to work alongside leaders in engineering, medicine, and business to solve unmet clinical needs. Being deeply embedded in an interdisciplinary collaboration between Bioengineering & OB/GYN departments allowed me to access engineering resources to build a medical device from scratch, test it on a patient alongside clinicians, and rapidly iterate based on feedback from clinical testing and user-needs assessments from business courses. Not only did this experience make me realize I wanted to become a clinician and be on the front-lines with the patients, but it also provided affirmation that I wanted to continue working with interdisciplinary teams to develop medical and digital health devices.”
